"Inherent Freedom"
by Kaylie Gallagher
At the age of (almost) three,
my daughter knows about freedom.
“I can do it!”, emerging with an
inside out & backwards shirt.
The outcome may be different from what I want, and yet,
her right to independence
is as imperative as her breath.
She is so naturally free
It lives in her bones.
She’s free
to feel proud, be too loud
free to scream with tinkling delight.
In my home she’ll be free
to read what she likes, free to write, without fearing what’s ‘right’.
Free to rage, free to cry, free to try.
I ask of the Universe:
“Let freedom be all she knows.”
I have hope that in
250 years from now when
my daughter’s ancestors are three years old
Freedom for All is set deep in Our bones.
